Elections are happening on in Shropshire on 6th May 2021 - for parsh councils, Shropshrie Council and the Police and Commisisoner

Shropshire Council is the authority responsible for organising Parish Council elections. For full details please refer to Shropshire Council’s website through this link. 

KEY DATES 

    • Notice of Election – 15 March 2021
    • Close of Nominations – 4pm 8 April 2021
    • Close of Withdrawals – 4pm 8 April 2021
    • Statement of Persons Nominated – no later than 4pm 9 April 2021
    • Last day to Register to Vote – Midnight Monday 19 April 2021
    • Last day to apply for postal vote – 5pm Tuesday 20 April 2021
    • Notice of Poll – no later than Tuesday 27 April
    • Polling Day – Thursday 6 May 2021
    • The Count – Sunday 9 May 2021

WHAT DO LOCAL COUNCILS DO?

Your parish serves your local community. Our work falls into three main categories:

  • Delivery of services e.g. play area, street lighting
  • Improve quality of life for residents e.g. working with partners to lower traffic speeds, offering grants to local groups
  • Give communities a democratic voice

BECOMING A PARISH COUNCILLOR

As a parish councillor you can become a voice for your community and make a real change. Councillors are community leaders and represent the interests of the communities they serve. Local councillors have three main responsibilities:

  • Decision-making e.g. representing the parish re development
  • Monitoring
  • Getting involved locally e.g. supporting local groups

GETTING ELECTED

To stand for election to a parish council you must both:

  • Be a UK or Commonwealth citizen; or be a citizen of the Republic of Ireland; or be a citizen of another Member State of the European Union
  • Be at least 18 years old

AND MEET AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING 4 CRITERIA:

  • Be an elector of the parish council; or
  • In the past 12 months occupied land or other premises in the area the parish council serves (as owner or tenant); or
  • Work in the area parish council serves (as your principal or only place of work); or
  • Live within three miles of the parish council boundary
